My Day at the Oxnard Tamale Festival

If you want to see what life feels like in Oxnard during the holidays, the Oxnard Tamale Festival is the perfect example. It’s a big, free, family-friendly event held in Downtown Oxnard, right along the same route as the annual Christmas Parade.

Every year, thousands of people come out to enjoy food, music, art, lights, and all kinds of holiday fun. It’s one of those events that makes Oxnard feel warm, welcoming, and full of life, and this year I got to be part of it.

What the Festival Is All About

The festival celebrates tamales from many regions of Mexico, and you’ll find different flavors and styles everywhere you turn. There are also sweet tamales, warm champurrado, and plenty of desserts. Live music plays throughout the day, and local artists and small businesses set up booths around Plaza Park. There’s even a free kids zone with rides and crafts, and Santa is there for photos. It’s a simple, fun community event that brings people together for the holidays.

My Personal Experience

I had a great time at the festival. Even though I showed up about an hour before closing, the energy was still strong. The music was loud, people were laughing and eating, and the Christmas lights made the whole park feel warm and cheerful.

I missed out on the strawberry and fruit tamales because they sold out, so I learned my lesson for next year: go early. But I still found corn tamales that were amazing, plus steak and bean pupusas. I finished everything with a glass bottle Coca-Cola.

I talked with a lot of vendors, and many came from other cities. I love when nearby communities visit Oxnard and share their food and culture. It makes events like this feel even more special.

Because it’s December, the sun went down early and the Christmas lights lit up downtown. It was the perfect backdrop for the festival. We even got a photo with Santa and the festival’s tamale mascot.

Since I arrived later in the evening, it wasn’t too crowded. That’s something I enjoy about Ventura County. Our events are lively but rarely overwhelming. The weather was comfortable too. I only needed a light coat, which is another perk of coastal living.
